I found a book about the history of various gold mines in Northern California in the basement of my friend’s childhood home. The book was full of black and white images of mine crews. Typically the owner is wearing a three-piece suit and big hat, looking healthy, while the rest of the crew appear to be half dead. The captions always include the name of the owner while substituting the individual names of the miners with, “others no named.” This book was made by cropping every unidentified miner from one of these photos to make individualized portraits of their invisible labor.
