	This book was made by printing
only one image. A photograph of Wy’east (Mt. Hood) was screen-printed over and over on top of itself embracing abstraction and messiness. The overlay printing was done consecutively so
that the ink didn’t have time to dry. The ink would offset from the paper to
the non-image parts of the screen then back to the paper with every print,
which produced pictorial abstractions that did not exist in the original
photograph. With every pull of the squeegee, the print was simultaneously
abstracted and added to.

Estonia
was one of the last European countries to be forcefully converted from paganism
to Christianity. Today Estonia is one of the least religious countries in
Europe. Only a small percentage of Estonians believe in God, but most of them
believe they can talk to trees. This body of work has something to do with that.


This project begins with a slow turn back to my
Estonian roots to embrace pre-Christian magical thinking, animism, awe and
wonder. I employ an advanced print technique I call, Willy-Nilly, that
prioritizes intuition, failure and chance over logic. Layering and repetition are used to
create hypnotic rhythms that look back to ancient spiritual technologies that
disrupt logical thinking, like spinning in a circle or singing. The layering of multiple photographs onto one picture plane
challenges the western obsession with the individual — especially as it’s
enforced by the single authoritative lens of the camera. These kinds of images obstruct legibility but also surface
new forms of reading. The
resulting pictorial
anomalies and abstractions confuse our relationship to nature as it’s mediated
through images. I think of this as an alternative tool
for understanding, revealing the hidden by challenging what we think and expect
landscaped pictures should look like.

Multi-Color screenprint monotypes

This body of work begins with
thinking of landscape as a process not a thing. I have been making prints by
translating the musical concept of polyphony) into visual terms. The multiple
voices of polyphony challenge the western obsession with the individual —
especially as it’s enforced by the single authoritative lens of the camera.
Layering and repetition are used to create disorienting rhythms to shake up the
logical thinking patterns of the viewer. At once spiritual and political, these
images of the American West pivot away from the historical use of landscape
photography in the colonization process. They ask us to go back to the origins
of the word respect, which means, “to look again,” and to
make room for another kind of relationship with the landscape and the more than
human world.

2023Multi-Color Screenprint Monotypes

This body of work begins with
thinking of landscape as a process not a thing. I have been making prints by
translating the musical concept of polyphony) into visual terms. The multiple
voices of polyphony challenge the western obsession with the individual —
especially as it’s enforced by the single authoritative lens of the camera.
Layering and repetition are used to create disorienting rhythms to shake up the
logical thinking patterns of the viewer. At once spiritual and political, these
images of the American West pivot away from the historical use of landscape
photography in the colonization process. They ask us to go back to the origins
of the word respect, which means, “to look again,” and to
make room for another kind of relationship with the landscape and the more than
human world.

This body of work begins with
thinking of landscape as a process not a thing. I have been making prints by
translating the musical concept of polyphony) into visual terms. The multiple
voices of polyphony challenge the western obsession with the individual —
especially as it’s enforced by the single authoritative lens of the camera.
Layering and repetition are used to create disorienting rhythms to shake up the
logical thinking patterns of the viewer. At once spiritual and political, these
images of the American West pivot away from the historical use of landscape
photography in the colonization process. They ask us to go back to the origins
of the word respect, which means, “to look again,” and to
make room for another kind of relationship with the landscape and the more than
human world.

A series of screenprints of an ariel photograph of a landscsape onto an ariel photograph of a landscape.
This body of work begins with
thinking of landscape as a process not a thing. I have been making prints by
translating the musical concept of polyphony) into visual terms. The multiple
voices of polyphony challenge the western obsession with the individual —
especially as it’s enforced by the single authoritative lens of the camera.
Layering and repetition are used to create disorienting rhythms to shake up the
logical thinking patterns of the viewer. At once spiritual and political, these
images of the American West pivot away from the historical use of landscape
photography in the colonization process. They ask us to go back to the origins
of the word respect, which means, “to look again,” and to
make room for another kind of relationship with the landscape and the more than
human world.

A series of photographs that are layered in photoshop. I use a variety of tools to overlay, adjust opacities, blur and erase boundaries, so that the images begin to slip through one another.

I layer multiple images taken from multiple
perspectives, moments in time and space creating a kind of polyphony. The use
of multiple voices challenges ideas that
are defined through the single perspective of the camera lens: the western idea
of the individual, the autonomous and contained self and time as a linear. The
polyphonic image is as a kind of entanglement that obstructs legibility but
also surfaces new forms of reading.

Whether it’s looking upwards
to alien flying squirrels in the sky, or downwards to anthropomorphized rocks
underfoot, artists and colleagues Maria Lux and Kyle Peets seek the weird,
humorous, and miraculous. In their dual exhibition, As Above, So Below,&#38;nbsp;rocks become extra-terrestrial, and the UFO-squirrels become terrestrial as
thought circles from the ground to the sky and back. The
gesture of listening to the unknown and the spirit of the imaginary are
applied to rocks and alien flying squirrels to attempt, in flawed terms, to
empathize with them. Play and the suspension of disbelief are used to shift
perspectives towards the more-than-human to destabilize
hierarchical ways of looking/acting at the world.
