Statement

My work is centered on the narratives we create to cope will feeling small in the face of things that are bigger than us like the unknown, the sublime, or failure. In many cases our narratives are implicated in some type of belief system that informs the way we move through the world. I use mischief and the uncanny to tilt those systems of knowledge and to poke holes in their logic to reveal just how fragile those systems really are and how breaking them can allow us to re-imagine our place in the world.

I am often skeptical of where my own belief systems come from and use my own doubt to investigate notions of yearning, deceit, and limitations. Recently projects have become more long term with the introduction of research-based approaches. The research explores the way in which the history of specific failure narratives (American Gold Rush of 1849) and the spectacle of popular culture combine to make dominant narratives that inform identity and prescribe power relations. I plunder image archives and re-introduce them into new contexts to show how malleable the meaning of images are and how that malleability is constantly influencing the way we make sense of the world. The relationship between print and our understanding of history is not objective and there is a large gray area between the two fields. I use that nebulous area between the image and how we use it to make meaning as place filled with opportunity to use creativity, contradiction and satire to critique dominant narratives and conventions.

Failure and limitations are prominent features of the human experience and we may spend our entire lives trying to be better even if we may never know how. I am interested in taking metaphors for desire and the unknowable, like the blue rose, the horizon, or the gold rush, and re-applying them to the world we live in. Like most cases in art making, this is another instance of finding new ways to say old things.
